Grrr! I just bought a silk sari and have not been able to figure out how to wrap it correctly!!?
I just bought a vintage sari from a store in the mall called EarthBound. It is sheer, pink, and approximatley 47"x196". I really love it,esp. since I bought it for thirty two dollars! I have been looking on Youtube and Google to figure out how to wrap the sari correctly. I don't if it's me or what, but I have not been able to figure out how to wrap it correctly! I have watched lots of videos and still wasnt able to get it right! Either my sari was caught up around me, or it fit too tight around my ankles, making it difficult to walk.
I know that there are many ways to wrap a sari, but if you could, could you please give me the easiest way for beginners?Did I get the right length? How can I wrap it so that it covers all of me?
Sheilana, you said that I need a drawstring skirt... but where can I get one? Does it have to be drawstring, or can it be one that ties around the waist?
You need a drawstring skirt for two reasons. Reason one is that you need something to tuck the sari into to wrap it. (Don't use a safety pin. You'll end up naked from the waist down at the most embarrassing moment or something.)
Reason two is because sari fabric is often very sheer. An underskirt which is not sheer will allow you to maintain a little dignity.
Tuck one end of the sari material in at the side. Bring some of the fabric around your waist to the front of the skirt. Then start folding the material over and back in pleats, about four to six inches wide. When you have about ten feet of fabric left, stop. Tuck the pleated fabric into the front of the skirt. Then bring the rest of the fabric around you once more and throw the remainder over your shoulder.
Edit: It doesn't have to be drawstring, but womens ethnic clothing traditionally is adjustable so that it allows for things like weight loss, weight gain and pregnancy. You can get the petticoats on Ebay, but you can make one very easily too. Just take some fabric, hem it at both ends, but make the hem bigger at one end. At that end, thread a string or a ribbon through, then sew the seam up. Ta da! You've just sewn a drawstring petticoat. (You can use a pattern if you feel brave enough to go a little fancier.) Try for a dark color to show up the color of the sari. For some reason light colors don't do so well, but any color is fine.
