What is Permanent Cosmetics?
What is Permanent Cosmetics?
Author: Lawanna Brock MS/MA
Permanent makeup is also known as permanent cosmetics or cosmetic tattooing. In scientific terms the technique is called micropigmentation, dermapigmentation or micropigment implantation. It is a modern technique used in cosmetics where pigments are inserted into the skin's dermis layer. The procedure is done by cosmetic technicians who use various methods and machines, including specialized or traditional tattoo or coil machines. In the United States, the tattooing inks and the pigments in the inks used, like all cosmetics and color additives, have to pass the FDA and other regulatory agency policies.
Putting regular makeup on the face might not be an option for some people. Permanent cosmetics are usually used by women who have lost some facial features as a result of old age, chemotherapy, or a genetic deficiency. It is also used by women who like to wear makeup, but are allergic to makeup components. Women with poor eyesight and cannot put on make up properly, have tremors or the movements of their hands and fingers are not precise, due to conditions like multiple sclerosis, arthritis, or may have had a stroke. Permanent makeup may be used to cover up or camouflage face or body scars and white spots. Some doctors have used it to enhance or restore the breast's areola, after breast surgery. More and more women who have active professional lifestyles enjoy the benefits of permanent cosmetics. There are no worries about smudges, smears, fading away, or imperfect application. The makeup stays and you look good in the swimming pool, when you first wake up, after a work out, or when you are just lounging around the house.
Permanent cosmetics can resemble regular makeup. This unique technique involves the use of a tattoo wand and a cosmetic technician can produce designs that resemble regular makeup. Cosmetic procedures usually involve placing permanent eyeliners, artificial eyebrows, lip liners, and more recently, full eyeshadow contouring.
One to Two Hour Procedure
Permanent makeup procedures usually take 1-2 hours to complete. Fine needles penetrate the skin at high speed and deposit the selected pigment into the skin's dermis layer. The patient usually feels slight discomfort after the procedure, followed by redness and slight swelling, but the application of topical anesthetic makes it pain free and tolerable. The pain and swelling usually disappear by the next day.
Permanent Eyeliners
The most common procedure requested is for permanent eyeliners. Women have a choice of colors and styles to choose from, including a simple defined line to a natural-looking soft lash enhancement. Most technicians will not extend the line beyond the eye. Shades exist in colors of black, charcoal, dark brown, light brown, navy, royal blue, teal, violet, and more.
Permanent Eyebrows
For women with little to no eyebrows, permanent eyebrows are the perfect solution. The cosmetic artist shapes and reconstructs the eyebrows by replicating microscopic hair, filling up missing or thin eyebrows. The procedure results to natural effect that gives the face character. A variety of colors and techniques are used to make a natural appearing brow.
Permanent Lip Liners
Permanent lip liners reshape and correct the lips symmetry. It adds fullness and definition to the lips. For a natural look, a thin line is applied, but for a more dramatic look heavier lines are defined. You can also change the shape of your lips or request to darken or soften your lip color. Your lips center can be highlighted with gloss, while a lip blush procedure can be used to add a soft mist color. Full lip color is available as well.
Semi Permanent Makeup
Semi permanent makeup may last from one to two years or more, depending on your maintenance routine. The pigmentation may fade over time, due to exposure to the sun, use of products that containing Retin A or Glycolic, and treatments that are related to skin cell removal. The result usually lasts for 10 years or more before significantly fading. You may be required to touch up the tattoos if you want to restore the colors but many procedures have lasted a lifetime.
