Information On The Boxer Dog Breed For Those Who Wish To Own One
When you have made the decision to home a dog it makes sense to inquire as to what breed of dog will fit nicely into your lifestyle. I say 'nicely' because it is important that the dog does fit into your lifestyle otherwise it gets neglected. If you read on you will see information on the boxer dog breed that will help you understand their breed and the needs that they have to be a happy healthy pet.
Here are some of the main boxer traits that is best understood so that you can build a strong lifelong friendship with a new boxer puppy.
1. What is the is the temperament of a boxer?
Boxers are energetic, friendly, and intelligent dogs. They are incredibly strong and alert around strangers, but at the same time they are very gentle with children and older adults. This makes them ideal guard dogs and companions for families. They can be a bit headstrong, but they learn quickly with positive reinforcement training.
2. Did you realise the male and female boxers have different temperaments?
Male boxers tend to be more laid back, whereas females are often more excitable and prone to mood swings. Male boxers may are friendly towards people and small pets, but may get into fights with larger dogs, especially other males. Females will sometimes fight with each other as well, but overall they do not tend to be as bold or aggressive as male dogs.
3. What is a must for a boxer dog?
Boxer dogs need to get plenty of exercise. If they don't, you can almost guarantee that they will expend their excess energy by chewing furniture or digging holes. Some of these chewing exercises may seem funny at times, but believe me when it is something valuable it is not so funny. My dog, Trixie was left in the house for about 2 hours one day when I took the kids to a lesson and I came home to find my handbag emptied in the lounge, my lipstick and my brush all chewed to bits. Nice one!
A boxer's energy can sometimes be too much for a family or individual to handle if they are away from home often and cannot give their dog enough attention.
4. Do boxers generally have a lot of health problems?
Boxers are prone to certain genetic disorders, including heart failure and hip problems. If you buy your Boxer as a puppy, you should make sure that the parents have had full health screenings so you will know that your puppy is as healthy as possible.
5. Where should I buy my new Boxer dog?
When you buy your puppy, find a responsible breeder who can provide you with information about the temperaments and health of both of the puppy's parents so you know you are getting a good puppy. You can get a list of responsible breeders from the Boxer club in your area.
Do not buy your Boxer from a pet store. The risks are too high for getting a dog that has not come from good healthy breeding stock.
6. Ideal family dogs
Boxers are wonderful family dogs who are possessive, loving, playful, protective and wonderful with children of all ages. They are intelligent and will love the children to bits. Once when the kids were at school Trixie got out of the yard and made here way down to the beach shops where the children often took her on the weekends when they went swimming and having a drink. Apparently she just sat there for two hours before we found her, waiting for the kids to arrive.
Hopefully you have found this information on Boxer dogs very helpful in judging if a boxer will fit into your family activities. They are an excellent breed and make great companions, but of course they are not for everyone. I wish you luck on your search to find the pet that is right for you!
